Choosing a hostel is a big decision. Before you pay any deposit, ask these 15 questions — and pay attention to how they answer, not just what they say.
About Safety
- Who is on premises at night? Is there a security guard, or is management available 24/7?
- Are there CCTV cameras? Where are they located? Are they monitored?
- What is the entry/exit policy? What happens if you come home late?
- Are male visitors allowed? Under what conditions and where?
- What is the emergency protocol? Who do you call if something happens at 2 AM?
About Food
- Who cooks the food? Is it a professional cook, a contractor, or someone from the management team?
- How many meals are included? Breakfast only? Breakfast and dinner?
- Can I see a sample menu? A good hostel will have one ready.
- What if I have dietary restrictions? Are they accommodated?
About the Room
- Can I see the actual room I'll be staying in? Not just a "sample" room.
- What is included in the room? Mattress, wardrobe, study table, AC?
- What is the bathroom situation? Attached or shared? How many people share?
About Payments & Policies
- What is the exact monthly cost? What is and isn't included?
- What is the security deposit? How and when is it refunded?
- What is the notice period to vacate? Is it in writing?
Red Flags to Watch For
